Instrintic versus Extrinsic Motivation

Motivating students can be the single most difficult challenge teachers face.  Some students will possess an inner desire or intrinsic motivation to complete assignments and acheive at their maximum capacity.  However some students lack that motivation and require nuturing and encouragement to perform expected tasks at school.

Here are a few hints for motivating students:
  1. Give student's choices and encourage students to make choices about assignments
  2. Give explicit instructions on what is expected; rubrics are good tools
  3. Celebrate and praise positive and desired student performance or behavior
  4. Give feedback quickly
  5. Offer rewards, but do not make them more important than the expected outcome.  Do not use rewards as bribes.
